Obituary for John Hargreaves

A loving family member, educator, coach, and a devoted community member, John Joseph Hargreaves, passed in the early hours of Saturday morning, February 17, 2018, as the rains blew in to take him away. John was born on December 3, 1926, in Throop, Pennsylvania, to Susan and William Hargreaves. He outlived his three beloved siblings, Thomas Hargreaves, Joseph Hargreaves, and Eleanor Sinsimer.

John lived, breathed, and bled baseball. It didn’t matter when or where, if an opportunity arose to play ball, he played. Long into old age, John could get into a batting cage, take a few swings, then knock every ball to the back of the cage. He played in college and the minors, and declined an opportunity to move toward the majors because he opted to take a position teaching high school in order to support his family, a decision that family members, even today, marvel at.

In 1944, John joined the United States Navy, sailing on the USS Power (and other vessels) and serving in World War II. In 1946, his active duty ended and he met his sweetheart, Ruth May Jones, whom he married in 1949.Though his military service officially ended in 1954, his service to his community did not.
John earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Panzer College of Physical Education and Hygiene in pursuit of a career in teaching. After twenty-years of teaching, John returned to school and earned his Master of Arts from Montclair State College and continued his service in the field of education and was a long-time educator and coach. There was nary a family vacation or outing in which John was not approached by a former student, former ballplayer, or someone else whose life he’d touched in some way.

Above all else, John was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 68 years; his children and their spouses, John W. and Claire Hargreaves, Jeanmarie and Donald Jones, James P. and Deborah Hargreaves, and Sandra and John Ledner; and his grandchildren, Amy L. and her husband Joey Mims, Jamie M. Jones and her partner Larisa Maxwell, Melanie J. Hargreaves, Katherine E. Hargreaves and her husband, John Woodruff, Donald M. Jones, James D. Hargreaves, Ashley N. Hargreaves, Alexis A. Ledner, Joshua L. Ledner, and Matthew J. Ledner. John has always been immensely proud of his family, and even in his last moments made sure they knew it.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Boys and Girls Club of America.
