When I was a teenager The Florence Methodist Church had a vibrant youth program starting with Junior High thru High School and beyond a few years. A big part of the success of that program was Ronnie and Verna Garwood. They were our counselors and organized a great deal of different experiences for us. When we expressed doing some kind of charity work they linked us with the local American Cancer Society to help raise funds going door to door. When there was an interest in getting involved with helping people in a long term project, they connected us with the NJ Children with Brain Injuries group. We met every Saturday with group of brain injured kids who were putting on a play. We worked one-on-one and got a real sense of what that kind of commitment was.
The biggest part of what they did was opening their own home on a Sunday night and have us meet there. They had three young sons and it must have been easier to just have us there. I don't think they realized that anywhere from 10 to 20 teens would be camping out in their house sometimes from 6pm to 10pm. What was nested there were two adults who were not our parents and treated us more as young adults. They gave us a sense of our worth and how to function in the adult world that we were drifting into. I think every teenager needs an adult, coach, teacher or someone invest some attention to help them get through those challenging years. I am 68 and I still look back on those years with Ron and Verna as key to growing up.

So sorry to hear of Ron's passing. Ron and I shared many .childhood and high school days in Florence. Had many good friends and Ron was one of them. May Ron and Verna rest in peace together again in the Lord's presence. Our deepest sympathies to the entire Garwood family. Tony and Jeanne Lubrano

Well man, this sucks. You leave behind a lot of us that you meant a lot to, and for that we are all sad. You are one of the good ones. RIP my friend.
