Obituary

James M. Gortych, 76, of Bethlehem, PA passed away on Thursday March 12, 2020. Born in the Bronx, New York, Jim was the only son of Charles and Margaret Mary (Molitor) Gortych and was raised in the Catholic faith.
Jim was a resident of the Bethlehem area for the past several years after moving from Staten Island, N.Y. He was a Master Electrician for over 40 years with Local # 3 IBEW in New York and a Project Manager for the Comstock Co. in New York .
Jim strove for excellence and mastery in every facet of his life and encouraged his family to pursue their own innate greatness; “No excuses” – being his mantra.
Jim’s interests ranged widely: singing in a band, weightlifting, scuba diving, running, cycling, and studying electrical circuitry of all forms, from nuclear power generation to building model helicopters. He used his expertise in electrical power during 9/11/2001 and along with his team, worked tirelessly to restore power to New York City and support the recovery efforts.
Animals and nature held a special place in Jim’s heart. Over his lifetime, he raised pedigree Persian cats, kept a saltwater aquarium that teemed with beautiful fish, housed a Green Conure and African Grey parrots, and enjoyed his beloved german shepherd, Victor. As a boy, he would trudge through the marshlands and collect snakes and other creatures for the purpose of satisfying his own curiosity as well as showing them to his less-than-enthusiastic sisters.
He was a brilliant mentor to athletes of many sports; seamlessly combining both discipline and humor with his zeal for competition. He offered sound advice to any and all who asked and spent every day educating himself and those around him on the issues of the world and his myriad of hobbies.
Jim is survived by his daughter Adrienne Manganaro of Florida, and 3 sisters: Margaret Lane of Denton, TX., Regina M. Gortych DDS and her husband Carl A. Murano DDS of Pittsford, N.Y. and Virginia Gortych-Barnes MD and her husband Frederick J. Barnes MD of E. Stroudsburg, Pa., nieces and nephews: Charles F. Barnes, Lillian R. Barnes, Nikolaus C. Murano, David J Lane and his wife Marissa Stabler, Ann Marie Hutton, and Maria Lawson and her husband Matthew; 6 great nieces and nephews , many cousins including Barbara Gortych PhD and many friends. Jim’s presence in our lives, his wisdom and great humor was profound. He will be sadly missed.
A Private service will be held at the convenience of the family with Fr. Carmen Perry officiating. Burial will follow at St. Raymond’s Cemetery Bronx, New York. The Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home Inc. 23 N. 9th.St. Stroudsburg, Pa. is in charge of the arrangements. Donations in Jim’s’ honor may be made to the Metropolitan Veterinary Associates – Paws of Promise foundation.
